Gili Trawangan

A wonderful end to a great summer. We returned last night from Gili Trawangan happy and thoroughly bathed in sunshine. Our second stay on the island. Everything as we had left it including the excellent accommodation. We don’t often recommend places to stay but Martas is exceptional. Being high season and Eid, the atmosphere was livelier than last year with imams and deejays competing long into the night. Being back from the main street we could cope with the noise. Each day started with an excellent breakfast.

Cairo didn’t dive this time but the boys did some snorkelling. They hired bikes and had fun negotiating the sandy route around the island, the waves of tourists and the horse and trap taxis. One of the joys of being on Gili Trawangan is the total omission of motorised transport. We spent an excellent day on Gili Air. Scallywags has a resort on both Gili Trawangan and Gili Air. We used their offer of assisted transportation over to Gili Air with the proviso that we ate at their restaurant. Not a hardship.

We managed to walk round to a bar claiming you could hold the sunset in your hands. At the busy bar we had some fun trying to get the positioning right and then watched as scores of other customers put down their Bintangs and picked up their cameras as the sun set behind Bali and the wonderfully shaped Mount Agung . Come the magical moment the boys decided to walk into the sunset. I would like to think they enhanced everyone’s picture.
