Fourth and Final

Filed under: Running — scotsabroad @ 3:23 pm

My fourth and final Pharoanic Run . Next year only one of the original NCBIS team remains in Cairo. Our best time ever, although we didn’t break the magical 8 hours missing out by 20 odd seconds! I reckon it was a remarkable achievement considering 1 of our squad had man-flu and another felt faint before his second 10K. I stepped in to run an additional 5K and a bit more, on top of my two legs, as we tried to stay in touch with other teams and keep an eye on the clock. We came third in the team relay. I found the additional kilometres tough and my pride was hurting as I failed to climb the hill to Saqqara. However, 100 K covered in 8 hours is a good result. Many of us averaged under the 48 minutes required in what turned out to be a day where the temperature rose well in to the 30s.

Shona was back in her trainers (her second Paraonic) with a vengeance – running two 6K legs as part of a ladies team. The boys were late getting to the site to see me finish but were ready to meet their mum as she crossed the finish line. Good to see her running again. Hope the opportunity arises more often in our next posting. However, we will have fond memories of this event. Egypt has provided me with some great run memories, I have run with some brilliant colleagues and friends and it’s not over as we are off to Luxor in January. Another wonderful Egyptian memory – The difference between the second and third place trophy? Our cup was identical, apart from the handles, ours had been hack-sawed off!
