Beirut Marathon

Filed under: Running — scotsabroad @ 8:30 am

Done but not dusted. I trained hard for this, my first marathon, but I am disappointed with my time. All the lonely 5am runs around 5th Settlement, being chased by dogs, the speed and hill training, should have brought me over the finish in under 4 hours.

However, I had a wonderful weekend in Beirut with Sergio and Christian. We toured Beirut on the afternoon of our arrival and then shared a taxi on the Saturday for a tour of the Jeita Caves and then Byblos. Byblos was worth the visit. The oldest inhabited city in the world. Good restaurant (Pepe) down by the harbour. Couldn’t keep off the beer.

On the Sunday, the run started at 7:15 am and by half way the temperature climbed. Didn’t get my hydration right and had to stop for a pee twice. Between 26K and 36K the going was tough in the heat. Just ran out of energy by 37K but did not hit the wall. Perhaps I didn’t try hard enough? Another attempt to run under 4 hours required.
