Clutching Defeat from the Jaws of Victory

Returned Monday night from my second school football tour – this time with junior varsity squad attending a tournament at Qatar Academy in Doha. Perhaps not as magical as last year’s tour to Syria but equally as absorbing and draining for the coach! My boys were outstanding reaching the semi-finals but losing out on penalties.  Both boys and girls won the fair-play awards voted for by all coaches and players. Very different coaching and managing year 11 students. Curfew was 10pm (squad was staying with host students and their families) but this became somewhat flexible depending on which mall some of the girls were shopping in and at which restaurant some of the boys were dining at. However I have nothing but praise and respect for the way the children behaved and supported each other throughout the trip. There was very little potential for trouble as Doha was a toy-town. Lots of fancy cars and take-aways. I phoned Shona from inside Debenhams to ask if she wanted anything from the Clinique counter. Don’t think I could live and work in such an environment. Was glad to get back to noise and a little bit of grime. More pictures of the trip on NCBIS website link opposite and through the gallery link. On the final day we had a trip on a dhow around the harbour that didn’t really set the heather on fire with the students. However I got to see the outside of the new Museum of Islamic Art. This might be worth a return visit for a weekend.

The flag is pretty cool though and the pedestrian crossing signs.
